Disgraced ex-detective David Thornton is certain it was murder — staged to bury a trafficking operation run through the old railway’s Victorian tunnels — and has ridden the same train, every month for three years, waiting for the case to crack open.
When a sudden death in the valley is written off as a tragic accident, one investigator won’t sign it away. A thin trail of money leads out of the coroner’s tidy conclusion and into something with a far longer memory — a pattern of deaths dressed up as accidents, reaching back through the mill’s worst decades. Someone has done this before, and learned to do it well. The question was never how the victim died. It’s how far up the line the answer goes.
Some truths are safer buried. This one won’t stay down. What began as one man’s private certainty becomes a matter of public record — and the people it implicates can no longer manage it in the quiet. As the story breaks out of the valley and into the open, the men who have spent years in the shadows discover they can no longer afford to be there. A signal at danger means stop.
